DESULTORY
was formed in
Sweden,
by vocalist / guitarist
Klas Morberg,
bassist Haken Morberg,
drummer Thomas "Snake"
Johnson and guitarist
Stefan Poge.
Desultory has been one of Sweden's leading Speed Death metal outfits since
its inception in the early ' 90s.They recorded 3 demos, and debuting in 1993 with
"Into Eternity",
Desultory has released several albums, including 1994's
"Bitterness" and
1996's
"Swallow the Snake"
under Metal Blade Records.

"Into Eternity"
Hailing from the country of
Sweden, the same place as the immensely talented, incredible band
Dismember
are Desultory. While comparisons between these bands may likely happen,
considering Desultory some semblances to old-styled Dismember material,
the group take a different angle on song writing and style.
Desultory have put together a
pretty impressive debut record,
"Into Eternity",
that follows the school of more technical Thrash Metal with a distinctly
European sound, not unlike that of
Coroner
it's more into the Swedish sound ( Sunlight / Skogsberg ). "Into Eternity"
has various complex songs that usually tread a basic rhythm with smoothly
integrated segues into different leads.
"Tears"
and "Twisted Emotions"
are good examples of the tightness the band exemplify, while keeping the
track interesting through diversions within the songwriting. While several
of the songs drift from a slower approach and bleaker mood, almost without
failing the pace is picked up in every song.
"Visions"
has a truly belligerent
unrelenting mid-pace that makes it stand out, although it is hard to
pick through the tracks since most are good. But definetly my favourite
tracks are "Into
Eternity" and
"Asleep", that couple
of tracks are like a punch in the face that increase your adrenaline into
a more higher level!
Insofar as debut albums go,
Desultory have released a very well-produced record that shows
musicianship and very harsh sound, recorded at
Sunlight Studio
with producer Tomas
Skogsberg,
this is one of that records that you most get to your cd collection, If
you are into Death Metal of course! One more release that
helped to make famous the Stockholm Scene.
"Bitterness"
What can I say about "Bitterness"?,
well first I didn't recognize the
Klas Morberg
vocals!!, totally difeferent, clean vocals but with the same rage as
always, the raw voice just go, and I
don't know why he did that because his vocal performance on
"Into Eternity"
was so fuckin' great, but this time he just turn down the harsh way, but
that doesn't mean that the music loose that too, the music are still into
Thrash Death way with a lot of great riffs. For example
"Life Shatters"
, "Bleeding"
and
"Among Mortals" are
killer tracks, with the Desultory touch that they show us on their first
album, with melodic parts and a more better songwriting everytime, more
mature with some slow parts along the songs.
I think that
Metal Blade
didn't give the necessary promotion to this album, even actually the label just sell the album on tape, I can't beleive it
(In fact the Desultory albums are very hard to find), this kind of bands
deserve a better support from their labels.
A second great release from
this killer Swedish act, recorded again at
Sunlight Studio
with master Tomas
Skogsberg ( good job
Tomas!) a killer production, and an album to search and If you see this
album in a Metal store and you don't buy it, just give you a shoot in
the head.
( I think that the guys of "Gates of Ishtar" were very
influenced by this album, you can listen all the influence on "At Dusk and
Forever" cd).
"Swallow the Snake"
Desultory's third album finds
the Death Metal band adding more melody into their foreboding, near-gothic
heavy riffs. Instead of diluting the group's impact, the addition of
stronger hooks actually makes the album more powerful, especially since it
coincided with the group
toughening up their rhythmic attack. Though
"Swallow the Snake"
lacks the consistent
songwriting of
"Bitterness",
these musical improvements make it nearly as impressive. ~

In my opinion, "Impressive" is
a wrong word, because instead of give a great Death Metal album they just
turn the band' style into a totally different way that doesn't belong to
Death Metal, therefore the great bands like Desultory or
Morgoth
or many other bands split-up, because they start to do experiments with
their music and just they make shitty music, or near-pop stuff. And I
think that's not fair to the fans that follow the band (or bands), I know
that the band don't care what the fans think but come on, you can't play
Death Metal one day and the next album play Goth Heavy Bizarre Rock or
something like that.
I agree with the "Evolution" into the bands
music but
you have to get the evolution step by step, not so fast like this "Swallow
the Snake", if they were another band , will be a great release , but no, sadly is Desultory.
This interview was made by a guy namely Tomas, editor from
a 'zine elsewhere in Europe, thanks to a Greek friend for send it!
DESULTORY
has been a wellknown band
in the underground scene, they has now a new demo
out called "Visions" and this tape are really great!
3 tracks of agressive Thrash Death Metal, now to
the interview with Klas Morberg the Singer and guitar player...
Tomas:
I was heared that your "Death Unfolds" demo has sold out pretty good,
how many
copies has you sold, and does people like it?
Klas Morberg:
Yes, it has now sold around 1500 copies which I think is very good and
the response has been great, we were even voted as 7:th best demo band
in THRASH & BURN...
T:
And now has you released a new
demo called "Visions", tell us more about it, are you satisfied with it?
K:
The "Visions" demo was
recorded in Sunlight in August ' 91 and contains 3 trax: "Forever Gone",
"Depression" and "Visions" and we are quite satisfied with the way it
turned out...
T:
And when are you m-Lp out how many tracks will it be, some title?
K:
It should be out when this zine is released and it will contain the 2nd
and the 3rd demo...
T:
Have you some tracks ready?
K:
Yes, right now were writting
new songs and we' ve got 4-5 new ones ready, some titles are "Twited
Emotions", "Into Eternity" and "Tears".
T:
The gig you did in Poland on
some kind of festival, was it a success for you, how many people was
there?
K:
We played a gig in Poland and
one in Moscow in Aug.' 91 in Poland there were
2000 and in Moscow it was 7000 people and the response was great!, We
played
with Vader, Asshole, Shud.
T:
Have you ever heard something from some record label?
K:
Yes, right now we are talking to a few quite big labels but nothing is
decided yet, so I don't want to say anything about it... Let's see what
happens...
T:
You are recording your stuff
in Studio Sunlight, and in my opinion you are not getting the usual
Sunlight sound, or I'm on wrong lines?
K:
Well, a lot of people say that
and it makes me happy, 'cos we try to create an own sound. We try to go
for a slightly cleaner sound, maybe a reason for that is we don't tune
down our guitars that much.
T:
What do you think of the old
Heavy Metal?
K:
I have grown up with Heavy Metal, I still love some bands like: Black
Sabbath (old) Iron Maiden (old) Ozzy, things like that...
T:
What are members of Desultory doing when they not play music?
K:
Right now I'm doing civil
service stead of the army. Thomas and Stephan works and Hakan goes to
school. On the end we like to meet friends, drink beers and go to some
club here in Stockholm.
T:
Future plans and anything last...
K:
We'll try to secure a record deal, write new material and hopefully play
here in Sweden and other countries. Thanks for the space in your zine,
take care, bye.
